Bulgarian Pianist Avguste Antonov to be Guest of New Music Society During Annual Fall Concerts

Pianist Avguste Antonov will be the Guest Artist of the New Music Society, appearing with the Dana Composers Ensemble, Robert Rollin director, on the second set of Annual Fall Concerts, November 4-6. The concerts will take place on Wednesday, November 4 at the Music at Noon concert series at the Butler Institute of American Art; Wednesday, November 4 Main Concert at 8:00pm in Bliss Recital Hall; Thursday, November 5 at 5:00pm at Ss. Peter and Paul Church on Covington; and Friday, November 6 at 11:00am at the Dana School of Music Convocation in Bliss Recital Hall.

Avguste Antonov

Avguste Antonov began his piano studies in Bulgaria at the age of 5. After moving to France, he studied at the Ecole Normale in Paris, and at the Conservatoire Nationale in Bordeaux. In 1999, he moved to the United States attending the University of Missouri-Kansas where he studied with Robert Weirich and Stanislav Ioudenitch (2001 winner of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition). He completed the Bachelor of Music in piano at the University of Kansas under Jack Winerock, and continued his studies at Texas Christian University with Tamas Ungar. Antonov has performed as a recitalist in Bordeaux, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Texas, and as soloist with several university wind ensembles and symphonies. Antonov specializes in music by living composers.

During his residency Antonov will be performing works by American Tin Pan Alley composer Dana Suesse (American Nocturne), former Dana Faculty member Till MacIvor Meyn (Suite Pastiche), recent guest composer Carter Pann (The Upstate Rags and Soiree Macabre), University of Miami faculty member Raina Murnak (an Ohio premiere of Le Mystere d'attraction), Matthew Lewis (an American premiere of his Fantasy Suite) and the world premiere of Blue Fantasy by Dana Faculty member Robert Rollin. On the Thursday program at Ss. Peter and Paul, Covington, Antonov will also perform Chopin's Etude No. 12, op. 25, and Haydn's Sonata No. 11, Hob. XVI/2.

New Music Society

The concerts will also present a work by Richard Zacharias, a local composer and New Music Guild Inc. member. Zacharias will hear world premiere performances of his Day Trip for flute, viola, and bassoon at the Butler Institute noon hour and the Wednesday evening Bliss Recital Hall programs. The performers are Dana students Evy Silvis, flute; Justin Jones, viola; and Deidre Nuss, bassoon.

Dana School of Music: Composer's Ensemble

The Composers Ensemble will perform two compositions by freshman Samantha Hogan, from Fredonia, New York. Meliae for trombone and euphonium, based on Greek mythological characters, will be played by senior Daniel Brandt, euphonium, and Hogan herself on trombone. Her quartet, Temporal Allusion for clarinet, euphonium, trombone and piano, will be performed by the aforementioned personnel and Richard Zacharias, B flat clarinet and Robert Rollin, piano.
