November 28 and 30, 2007 • The Annual Fall Concerts of the New Music Society normally focus on works by Youngstown area composers and Dana School of Music student composers. This year's three concerts are no exception. They will take place noon on Wednesday, November 28 at Butler Institute of American Art, that evening at 8:00 p.m. at Bliss Recital Hall, and 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 30 in Bliss Recital Hall.
Elizabeth Bannon, a Dana graduate and Treasurer of the New Music Guild, Inc. (the community board which supports the New Music Society), will perform the premiere of her Cinderella's Dream: A Minuet for piano on the evening show. She will also perform Milonga del Ángel by popular Argentinian Astor Piazzolla. Mrs. Bannon, like Piazzolla, is also known for her fine accordion playing.
Graduate student Sarah Korb will perform the world premiere of Richard Zacharias' Return for piano solo composed in memoriam for a close friend. Mr. Zacharias is also a board member of the New Music Guild, Inc.
Flutists Danielle Frabutt and Adrienne Lehotsky, both seniors at the Dana School will perform a number of premieres by student composers. D Flutes by graduate student Darci Kuhlber and Snap Dorian and Phrygian Flutes by graduate student Sarah Korb will be among these premieres, as will Snow Dreams, a holiday composition with some quotations of well-known melodies, by Dana student composer Mary Grace Costello. Costello includes a vocalist in her final movement.
The Guest Ensemble will be the Youngstown State Tuba Ensemble directed by Dana tuba professor, Brian Kiser. The group will perform Meltdown, a jazz work by Jon Sass on the Friday morning concert. The new Musical Theatre department at Dana will be represented Wednesday evening by performances of works by Tin Pan Alley composers George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.
Sarcasm, a trio for Bb clarinet, Bb trumpet, and French horn, by Dana sophomore Daniel Brandt will also received its first performance, as will A Spritz o'Sprezzatura, a rendition of a Bach fugue by graduate student Tim Webb transcribed by Sarah Korb for saxophone quartet and percussion.
The Composers Ensemble directed by Dana composition faculty Robert Rollin will perform William Albright's Daydreams, an improvisatory work in a version for violin, bassoon, electronic keyboard and piano. Albright was a well-known American composer who taught at the University of Michigan. This will be on the Butler concert by his "Tuning In," performed by a student saxophone quartet directed by graduate student Sara Kind on the Butler concert.
All concerts are free and open to the public.
